To enable GPs to focus on the COVID-19 booster programme, the Government has brought in new temporary legislation which allows employees to self-certify for 28 days.
Employees can normally self-certify sickness absence for the first seven days only.
The new legislation comes into effect on the 17th December 2021 until 26th January 2022. It applies to absences beginning on or after 10 December 2021, up to and including absences which begin on or before 26 January 2022.
The change means employees can now take up to 28 days off without having to prove their incapacity.
GPs will still be required to supply fit notes for periods of absence exceeding 28 days.
The change does not affect eligibility for statutory sick pay.
